Woolen Rugs
As many will already know wool is a natural fabric taken from the sheep. Generally speaking woolen rugs are handwoven, hand-tufted, hand-knotted, or hand-loomed. Any woolen rug made with a machine will never be 100% wool and will have some man made fibres mixed in.
100% natural wool rugs are expensive, but they quality is second to none. The colours do not fade and they are very good at repelling spills. The disadvantage is that in the early days they will shed so regular vacuuming is required in the first few weeks.
They can also be difficult to clean as the natural fibres tend to repel liquids.
Silk Rugs
Silk rugs are often thin, fine, and soft to the touch. They are also very expensive and considered a luxurious rug. These should only ever be used in areas of very low traffic as they are both hard to clean, and expensive to get cleaned properly.
Silk is a delicate fabric and must be treated with great care.
Cotton Rugs
These are budget friendly rugs when compared to the higher end wool and silk rugs. The downside is that they fade quickly and they do not repel stains. These are also difficult to clean, and care needs to be taken not to wash out the colours.
Jute and Bamboo Rugs
These are classed as natural rugs and tend to be popular in coastal homes and in holiday homes. These are good value for money rugs. They are notoriously difficult to clean.
Leather, Hide and Sheepskin Rugs
These rugs are made from animal hides and are an expensive rug to buy. Most leather rugs are made from woven strips. Hides and sheepskin are usually the full hide of the animal. These are classed as a luxury rug.
They are pretty easy to clean, though cleaning takes quite a bit of care and time. They are however particularly bad at collecting dust and dirt. That is bad looking especially for the lighter looking hides such as sheepskin.
Faux Fur/ Faux Hide Rugs
These rugs are a good choice for anyone who like the look of fur but don't like the idea of having a real animal hide in their home. These are now gaining a lot in popularity.
These are usually made from a blend of acrylic and synthetic materials, all man made, and made to look like real fur. These can be difficult to clean as you need to take care that you don't lose the look and feel of your rug.
Polypropylene Rugs (Synthetic or Man Made)
Polypropylene is certainly a strange name and it is a synthetic or man made material just like polyester that we have described below. These are budget friendly rugs and if you look closely you will find that they are thinner than wool or cotton rugs.
They are great for areas of high traffic as they were really well. They do get dirty though, but the good news is they clean up extremely well.
Microfibre and Polyester Rugs
Microfibre and polyester rugs are man made or synthetic rugs. In many cases the rug will be 100% polyester as these are very common. Sometimes though they will be mixed with other synthetic materials.
Often the polyester is combined with microfibre to create a plush look and feel. Almost always these are made using a machine and they are mass produced. The fibre element makes them look like more expensive rugs.
These are the cheaper type of rug and they are also the rugs that get dirty faster. They can handle a stronger form of cleaning to have them looking like new again.
